Name: Shannon Akers
Degree: Bachelor of Economics
Shannon is a third year economics student one of the newest members of the WIB subcommittee. As a finance major, she has always had a keen interest in the impact of the public policy on financial markets. Shannon is passionate about workplace diversity, veganism and climate change advocacy.
For the past three years Shannon has spent her time outside of studying working for Flight Centre as a foreign exchange consultant, learning about the complexities of the FX trading. Other than this, Shannon has undertaken everything from work experience at a veterinary clinic, to working the counter at McDonald’s.
Shannon is currently on the hunt for a new venture, hopefully in the financial services industry, to gain further experience before she graduates.
In the Future
Shannon hopes to utilise the skills she has gained in her economics degree to start a career in the public sector, ideally gaining a role in policy work in the long run. Until then, she is keeping her options open and like most students, just trying to balance working, studying, travelling and attending as many WIB events as she can fit in!
